How to Layer Necklaces Like a Stylist

We are big believers in forever jewellery here at Posh Totty Designs. So layering your necklaces and chains is a really fun way to reinvigorate your favourite pieces and create a whole new look. It is not only on-trend and looks super stylish, but it will also create a look completely unique to you.

To help get you started here are some tips and ideas from our designers and jewellers on how to layer like a pro, without looking like you have tried too hard!

Don’t be afraid to mix it up.

Be brave and mix different types of necklaces. Wear newer pieces with loved vintage treasures, or contemporary with classic designs. Even mixing metals such as different types of 9ct gold or gold plated sterling silver can work well and really make a statement.

The main thing is to have something that keeps the look cohesive, so it feels casually curated rather than too chaotic and thrown together! (see tips below).

Try a Focal or Statement Piece.

If you wear a large pendant necklace, locket or even a chunky chain, layer it with more delicate necklaces or chains that complement the piece and makes it the hero or focal point, rather than fighting for the eye’s attention.

How many should I wear?

Obviously, you can wear as much or little jewellery as you like, but we find that layering 3 chains or necklaces is the optimum number – not too much, not too little, just right.

Wear different lengths

Mind the Gap! Experiment with different chain lengths. The key is to have gaps between the chains so they don’t all sit together and lose the definition of each necklace or chain design. For example, the shortest length at 18” (our standard chain length), then add a longer 20” chain followed by 24”.

Create Balance with Texture and Design

If wearing all the same metal or similar delicate necklaces, for example, find ways to create some texture and highlights. A little disc pendant in amongst some delicate chains for example? A birthstone can add a pop of colour and interest? Different links and details in the chains? The idea is to create balance by adding in some light and shade to the overall look.

Enjoy!

Jewellery should be something we find pleasure and joy in. Just have fun revisiting your jewellery collection and experimenting with your favourite pieces until you find your own original look that matches your own personality and style.
