#14 My Top 5 Necklace Layering Tips

Alice Through the Looking Glass #1

“Before you leave the house,” the fashion designer Coco Chanel said, “look in the mirror and remove one accessory.”

As much as I love Chanel, I’m a maximalist and a ‘more is more’ kind of girl, so I couldn’t disagree more with the statement above! I’m a born Magpie and I’ve always loved collecting vintage charms, mixing them with current designs and layering them up around my neck, fingers & wrists, so this trend has always been a favourite of mine.

Recently I have been asked by a few people to divulge my secrets into layering jewellery. To be honest, the truth is there is no real secret, it really is just a case of putting on favourite pieces at the same time, styling them in a way that suits and tells a story.

However, I have gone back to basics to try and give you some simple tips for layering. I have used our graphic designer, the lovely Chantelle, to model some beautiful pieces from our collections.

Tip 1- Wear the most delicate piece on the shortest chain.  For me, that is always my ’Share a Hug’ necklace in yellow gold but we have chosen a beautiful Crescent Moon for Chantelle.

Short chains can start from 14” depending on the thickness of your neck and where you want it to fall, i.e., a choker.  I wear an 18” as I want it to hang a little lower and I have a thicker neck.

Tip 2 - Space out the necklaces so that every piece is distinct.  You don’t want a big clump of chains unless it’s intentional.  We have varying lengths of chains making it easy to spread them out. They don’t all have to be perfectly spaced but don’t lie them all on top of each other or they will quickly get tangled.

Tip 3 - Mix metals and styles of chains.  You can go as crazy as you want with this, from box chains to satellite chains to large paper clip link chains. Keep it simple, not all chains need to have a pendant or charm on them as they are often beautiful in their own right.

Tip 4 - At the bottom of the chains, anchor the style with your biggest piece. I always wear my Worn Shell pendant, design inspired by a shell I found in Mexico. For Chantelle, we used a Birthstone Confetti Disc Necklace.

Tip 5 –My biggest piece of advice is to have fun with it and don’t be restricted (I am also a ‘break the rules’ kind of girl!)

Just love your jewellery and mix it up for a new look every day.
