PTD Makes A Crafty 2018

PTD Makes A Crafty 2018

We launched PTD Makes in 2016 in our tiny boutique shop in Brighton's North Laine to give our customers the opportunity to get hands on and crafting with some of our favourite crafts. We've come a long way since then, holding classes in our flagship and London stores, and have loved every minute of our collaborations with Stylist, Heal's, Weekend:In and Whittard's. In April last year, we added our immensely popular Silver Ring Making Workshop to the roster of craft classes - and boy, has that one gone down well with you!

We stopped for a cuppa with PTD's in-house craft queen, Harriet, to chat a little more about PTD Makes and what the classes have to offer.

What was the inspiration behind launching PTD Makes? What classes do you currently run?

Posh Totty Designs is full of incredibly talented people from all kinds of creative backgrounds, so we thought what better way to share this creativity with the public!

We currently offer a ring making workshop, where you carve your dream ring design in wax. We then cast your wax ring in solid silver, with the additional options of personalisation, 9ct rose or yellow gold plating, oversized design and/ or precious stones. Our second workshop is our Macramé hanging planter workshop. In this workshop we teach you the traditional art of macramé knotting, creating a completely hand knotted planter.

Which classes have been the most popular to date?

The ring making workshop has been incredibly popular - we never expected such a wonderful response so quickly! However, when the Christmas season comes around, our Pom Pom Wreath Workshop becomes our best seller! (Available at Christmas only)

Do people who come to the classes need any craft or making experience?

Not at all! All our classes are designed with everyone in mind, whether you are from a creative background or trying something for the first time. We are on hand to make sure you come away with a finished product you not only love but have created it with your own hands.

Do class goers need to bring anything with them to sessions?

All our workshops include all materials and tutoring, so you don't need to bring anything. But if you have any design ideas, inspiration, sketches we love to see them! This way we can help guide you in the right direction. We see a lot of Pinterest boards and images saved from Instagram. For inspiration and an idea of what can be created in the workshop our @PTDmakes Instagram is a great starting point!

How many people do you accommodate per session? Is it possible to book private workshops?

We accommodate for a maximum of 12 people per workshop and a private booking is 100% possible. Private parties can be hosted in either of our stores, or if you have a location you would like us to come to, all our workshops are fully mobile. When it comes to private workshops, we can accommodate as many people as the space will allow... Our biggest workshop to date was a group of 30!

What’s your favourite class to run?

I honestly love hosting them both! Creating the ring making workshop was something new for myself as I’m not a jeweller. Working first hand with the jewellers to design and create the workshop while I learnt the skill alongside was challenging but so much fun. It sounds corny but the best thing about either workshop is the real mix of people we meet, we love it when we see customers coming back again and again.

Do you have any tips for getting inspiration or getting into making at home? What’s your favourite craft?

If you are a visual person (like myself) going to workshops is a great way of learning something new as you get to see it first hand and be immersed in the atmosphere with other people.

I always feel like having a go is the best way to get started: throw yourself in at the deep end! Find something that interests you, either online, via Instagram or Pinterest or find a kit you would love to try and give it a go. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just something you enjoy. I am currently trying a drawing a day challenge for 2018. So far they aren’t perfect, but I’m keeping going. By the year is out, you never know what you could have achieved!
