BLACK FRIDAY IS HERE!

We did a little research to find out how the Black Friday weekend became such a shopping frenzy. Here's what we discovered...

1. The expression 'Black Friday' originated in the USA and was actually coined in 1864 to describe an event which saw the price of gold sky rocket on the stock market. To counter the spike, the government flooded the market with gold which caused a huge downturn it the value of gold, meaning that scores of investors forfeited heavily. And while we observe Black Friday at the end of November every year, this 19th century gold fold happened on 24th September.

2. More recently in the 1960s, the term was popularised by the police force in the state of Philadelphia, USA, when they used it to describe the appalling traffic and pollution on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It's thought that a combination of Thanksgiving over-indulgence and transport chaos was to blame for the number of people who didn't make it into work the following day. And when you're faced with the prospect of sitting in a traffic jam, or just taking advantage of the day off to do a spot of Christmas shopping, we're sure we'd go for the latter!

3. In the 1990s, 'Black Friday' became a widespread expression across the USA with more and more retailers jumping on board with attributed flash sales and discounted goods. It didn't make its way over to the UK until 2010.

4. Jewellery is the industry that tends to offer the worst discount deals over Black Friday - a squeak of a markdown of 4% on average! So I guess that makes Posh Totty Designs positively heroic in the discount department...
